“The One I Call Mama” from Week 12

The One I Call Mama

“The One I Call Mama” is the song of the week for Week 12 (the final week!).  You can listen and download it HERE.

When I started writing this one it started sounding like an Irish drinking song that you’d hear in a Dublin pub.  It still sounds that way.  However, the arrangement is a nod to Chopin Continue reading

“Sailor’s Lament” – from Week 9

Sailor's Lament

“Sailor’s Lament” is the song of the week for Week 9.  You can listen and download HERE.

There was an air of lamentation as I sat down at the keyboard for this week’s tune.  In general I was thinking about decisions one makes in perhaps not the best state of mind which lead to consequences that are less desirable than one would have hoped. Continue reading

“Song For The Stage #4” – from Week 8

Song For The Stage #4

“Song For The Stage #4” is the song for Week 8.  You can listen and download it HERE.

My son asked me if I choose a title for a song then write it.  A lot of times titles don’t come until after I’ve written it.  So far, none has come to me for this one.  There are others of this ilk, hence, #4.

One afternoon Steve Allen and I were playing tunes we had written for each other and I had a song I had written based on one of the Chopin waltzes.  Continue reading

“Pacem” – from Week 7

Pacem“Peace isn’t the absence of conflict but the ability to cope with it” – unknown

“Pacem” is the song of the week from Week 7.  You can listen and download it HERE.

This is another instrumental like “Ascension” and like that tune I will leave the interpretation for the listener to determine what it means to you.

I will admit that I’ve been working on about four tunes with lyrics which haven’t quite gelled and I was desperate today to make sure I completed Week 7.  I will also admit that I allowed other distractions Continue reading

“I Bet You Thought You’d Never Miss Me” – From Week 6

I Bet You Thought You'd Never Miss Me

“I Bet You Thought You’d Never Miss Me” is the song of the week for Week 6.  You can listen and download it HERE.  (lyrics follow this post)

I know, I know, I’m a day late in getting this one out.  Things were a little crazy at home and it kept me from recording this one.

About the tune, like they say, Karma will eventually come and slap you ‘side yo’ head.

They also say there are two sides to every story.

This is mine. Continue reading

“Ascension” – From Week 5

Ascension

“Ascension” is the first instrumental of the project.  You can listen and download it HERE.

Descriptions of instrumentals for me seem to take away from the ability of the listener to formulate what the song means to the individual.  When lyrics are absent, each person can have a completely different take on the intention Continue reading

Week 4, Completed: Proof of success deferred

Crawdads

Well, I can honestly say that I wrote and recorded a tune this week.

However, I’ve chosen not to post it for fear of alienating my fan base which consists of immediate family members and four “friends” on Facebook.

Besides, when I began the Challenge I never said I would have to publicly display proof. But for you skeptics out there, I do have witnesses that can attest that Week 4 was completed and would sign a notarized statement if appropriately bribed.

The song was a dare for a novelty tune Continue reading

“The Promised Land” – from Week 3

The Promised Land

“The Promised Land” is the Song of the Week for Week 3 and you can listen and download it HERE! (lyrics at the end of this post)

Coincidentally, “The Promised Land” was written a week after “I Am In Heaven” but the former was not inspired by the latter.

The inspiration for “The Promised Land” actually came from a friend who had been sunbathing in her bikini by a lake while a group was being baptized in the water. Continue reading
